Congressman Bishop Supports Coronavirus Bill

March 27, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives urging the passage of H.R. 748, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

"Mr. Speaker, I'm going to vote yes enthusiastically. This is a big bill, but the American people are bigger. They will respond to the present threat as Americans have always faced grave challenges – as free men and women, with deep reservoirs of strength, capability, and when summoned, duty and confidence.

It is the duty of some to mobilize this government to backstop the American economy. The duty of some to isolate to blunt the contagion. The duty of some to face risk tending the afflicted. And, fellow Americans, the duty of the rest of us to mobilize the unstoppable force of the American economy to provide supplies, innovate technologies and enlarge healthcare capacities to meet the needs of all and to defeat this enemy.

With God's help, this virus is no match for the United States of America, I yield back." -Rep. Bishop

The CARES Act passed the House by voice vote on March 27, 2020 and heads to President Trump's desk for signature. The bill will provide direct payments up to $1,200 per worker and $2,400 per couple, depending on income level. It also includes $350 billion in small businesses loans, with forgivable portions, $250 billion in temporary supplemental unemployment insurance, authorization for large business lending by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and critical funding for medical and emergency workers as they respond to spreading COVID-19.
