Congressman Bishop Votes Against the Reauthorization of FISA Without Reforms

March 11, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) released the following statement on his ‘no' vote on the H.R. 6172, the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act, which would effectively reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

"I am deeply concerned about abuses perpetrated under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act programs and fear legislation offering only the appearance of reform continues to trample constitutional rights of Americans. We should not allow mass-data collection to operate so far outside the protections in place to prevent U.S. persons from unlawful search and seizure. This topic demands essential questions weighing national security imperatives versus constitutional rights be debated, and I was disappointed to be handed a lackluster bill 24 hours before a vote with little recourse to amend or improve."
