Bishop to Vote Against Democrats’ “For the Politicians Act”

March 3, 2021

Washington, D.C. –Congressman Dan Bishop will vote against H.R.1, the For the People Act, which will fundamentally redesign our nation's electoral systems to secure Democrats' permanent governing majority and stifle Americans' First Amendment rights.

"The For the People Act should be properly dubbed the For the Politicians Act. This insidious attack on our Constitution will effectively ensure that your vote will never matter again. The bill also repurposes Americans' hard-earned tax dollars to fund Democratic politicians' campaigns and outlaws states' duly-enacted voter ID laws. Speaker Pelosi is looking to ram through this partisan bill to silence her opponents and ensure Democrats will retain a permanent governing majority. Securing free and fair elections is the last thing this legislation is intended to do," said Rep. Dan Bishop.

H.R. 1 federalizes American elections in violation of the Constitution. The legislation also redirects taxpayer dollars to fund incumbent politicians' campaigns, offers a 6:1 federal contribution match where for every $200 a candidate raises, he or she will receive $1,200 back in federal subsidies, fully legalizes ballot harvesting, and guts state Voter ID laws.

Congressman Bishop offered an amendment to the legislation to protect states' Voter ID laws. However, Speaker Pelosi refused to grant floor consideration of this commonsense amendment while allowing votes on amendments offered by Rep. Ayanna Pressley to lower the age of eligibility to vote to 16, and Rep. Cori Bush's amendment to allow violent felons to vote even if they are still in prison.

Rep. Bishop serves on the Courts, Intellectual Property, & the Internet Subcommittee and the Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law Subcommittee on the Committee on Judiciary.
