Bishop to Vote Against Democrats’ Bill to Defund the Police

March 3, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) will vote against the George Floyd JUSTICE in Policing Act, which defunds and villainizes our nation's law enforcement community.

"The death of George Floyd was abhorrent, but the Democrats' radical George Floyd JUSTICE in Policing Act only creates deeper divisions by demonizing and defunding law enforcement officers who work to keep our communities safe. These brave men & women put their lives on the line each and every day with little fanfare. They deserve our thanks and respect, not this partisan attack that threatens officers' livelihoods and safety. I am an ally to our law enforcement and I always back the blue," said Rep. Dan Bishop.

The George Floyd JUSTICE in Policing Act defunds law enforcement agencies across the country by authorizing hundreds of millions of dollars in unfunded mandates. The bill also eliminates qualified immunity for police officers and lowers the mens rea standard for bringing civil lawsuits against law enforcement officers. These changes will jeopardize law enforcement safety and will undoubtedly lead to police pulling back from communities.

Rep. Bishop serves on the Courts, Intellectual Property, & the Internet Subcommittee and the Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law Subcommittee on the Committee on Judiciary.
