Bishop Supports Increased Penalty for Violent Rioting

June 5, 2020

CHARLOTTE, NC—Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) joined Congressman Ted Budd (NC-13) to introduce legislation that doubles the federal penalty for violent looting and rioting.

"The government's priority must be to keep our people safe—which includes safe policing. Despite the valid outrage in the wake of George Floyd's killing, we cannot condone the actions of those who compound the tragedy by destroying our communities," said Rep. Bishop.

The federal penalty for rioting is currently five years, and the No Toleration for Rioters Act would double it to ten years. To see Rep. Bishop's statement on the protests across North Carolina, click here.
