Bishop Rejects Dems’ Shifting Cost of their Medicare Cuts to Next Generation

March 19, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Bishop voted against Democrats' attempt to shift the cost of Medicare cuts imposed by the Pelosi Payoff to the next generation.

"Rather than work with Republicans on a targeted COVID relief package, Democrats chose to recklessly push through their $1.9 trillion so-called 'rescue plan' all on their own. The Pelosi Payoff not only provided billions in giveaways to liberal special interests, but also overspent even Democrats' insane spending appetite, which triggered $36 billion in automatic cuts to Medicare. They had a chance to work across the aisle to stop these cuts from happening in the first place. But Democrats decided to simply shift the cost of their own mistakes onto the national credit card. They put seniors at risk of losing their healthcare and saddled younger Americans with a heavy financial burden. Democrats'radical agenda is costing everyone else, and they don't seem to care," said Rep. Dan Bishop.

The Pelosi Payoff ended up being $1.9 trillion in borrowed money for mostly extreme liberal priorities. To pay for them however, automatic Medicare cuts were triggered to offset deficit increases, as required under Pay As You Go (PAYGO) rules established by the 2011 Budget Control Act. Republicans offered an amendment that would have stopped these cuts, with solutions such as reducing bailouts to poorly run "blue states" and excluding illegal immigrants and prisoners from receiving stimulus checks. But Democrats refused, opting instead to shift the cost of their mistakes to our children and grandchildren.
