WASHINGTON D.C.--Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) authored a letter urging the leaders of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives to include funding for Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTIs) in future coronavirus relief.

“There are 37 NASNTIs to educate 80,000 students across 10 different states, but they received only 0.6% of funds for coronavirus relief. I’m proud to support these institutions, which are vital to the education and success of generations of Native Americans, including the Lumbee in my district. NASNTIs must be prioritized in future coronavirus relief,” said Rep. Bishop.

NASNTI schools received $6.1 million of $1 billion apportioned for Minority Serving Institutions when Congress passed the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. The letter, led by Congressman Bishop and joined by Reps. Kendra Horn (OK-05), Diana DeGette (CO-01), and Colin Peterson (MN-07) as signatories requests a minimum of $27 million in funding for NASNTIs in future relief.

In North Carolina’s Ninth Congressional District, the NASNTIs are University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Robeson Community College and Bladen Community College.
