Bishop Demands Transparency from the Department of Justice Regarding FBI Meetings Against North Carolina’s Parents

October 19, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Bishop (NC-09) sent a letter over the weekend to the U.S. Attorneys for North Carolina demanding full transparency regarding any meetings conducted by the FBI for the purpose of strategizing against parents' First Amendment rights:

"Attorney General Garland owes America's parents answers as to why he's targeting them for trying to protect their own children. If there's evidence of widespread violent threats on behalf of moms and dads, Garland certainly hasn't shown it. In the meantime, if the FBI is already conducting ‘strategy' meetings with U.S. Attorneys for North Carolina against our parents, I'm demanding to be notified about it and be allowed to attend," said Rep. Dan Bishop.

By memorandum on October 4, 2021, Attorney General Garland directed the FBI to meet with leaders in every judicial district in the nation over the issue of parents at school board meetings. Members of Congress have the right to be made aware of these meetings and permitted to attend. The First Amendment rights of parents must be protected, and our letter makes clear to the Biden Department of Justice that Members of Congress will be monitoring these meetings closely. This letter is also co-signed by Rep. Ted Budd (NC-13), Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03), and Rep. David Rouzer (NC-07).
