Bishop Cuts Cash to CHAZ, Cities Promoting Lawless Anarchy
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) introduced the CHOPing Cash for CHAZ Act of 2020 with Representatives Ted Budd (NC-13), Andy Biggs (AZ-05), and Matt Gaetz (FL-01), to cut federal funds to states and localities that allow lawless so-called ‘autonomous zones.’
“I support federalism, but when liberal-run states and localities relinquish homes and businesses of taxpaying citizens to lawless mobs without objection, Congress must step in," said Rep. Bishop. "Elected officials have prioritized liberal agendas over order—putting dedicated law enforcement most at risk. We are a nation of laws, and if a state or city chooses to promote anarchy, Congress should no longer fund them for they are not doing the basic job taxpayers pay us for—protection and order,” concluded Rep. Bishop.
“We cannot permit so-called autonomous zones to exist anywhere in America. Lawless ANTIFA thugs should not be allowed to take over parts of a city. Any city that tolerates this flaunting of the rule of law shouldn’t receive funding from the federal government. Big thanks to Rep. Bishop for his leadership on this issue,” said Rep. Ted Budd (NC-13).
"Washington State and Seattle leadership have allowed lawlessness and anarchy to fester in CHOP/CHAZ. This zone has led to violence, and has fostered hopes of other autonomous zones around the nation. This cannot happen. Congress must employ its leverage of the power of the purse to ensure that justice and the rule of law remain America's guiding force. If local leadership capitulates to mob-like behavior, the federal government must incentivize a change of heart and protect the civil rights for every American." said Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05).
“Federal taxpayer dollars should not subsidize governments that tolerate and support 'autonomous zones' within their jurisdictions. These zones are an assault on the Constitution and laws of the United States and should be dealt with swiftly. I’m proud to cosponsor the CHOPping Cash for CHAZ Act, which would defund cities and states who pander to these bubbles of anarchy and help restore law and order to our neighborhoods.” said Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL-01).
Seattle recently ceded several blocks of its city—including many citizens’ homes—to the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ). Unsurprisingly, there have been reports of ANTIFA violence, police stations vandalized and two shootings in the area, one resulting in the death of an individual. The CHOPing Cash for CHAZ Act of 2020 would prevent any city that encourages these zones from being eligible for FY2021 funding if they fail to disband an autonomous zone in their city within seven days. The offending government entity can re-apply for funding by disbanding the zone and presenting a report to the Department of Justice detailing how the zone was disbanded and how to prevent this from occurring in the future.
