Bishop, Cotton Call on Biden to Withdraw Xavier Becerra as HHS Pick

February 22, 2021

Washington, D.C—Today, Congressman Dan Bishop (R-NC) and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) were joined by 73 colleagues in sending a bicameral letter to President Biden urging the president to withdraw former Calif. Attorney General Xavier Becerra's nomination to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

"Xavier Becerra is radical, divisive, and supremely unqualified to serve as the Secretary of HHS. Mr. Becerra's profound lack of healthcare experience leaves him wholly unprepared to combat the COVID-19 pandemic or manage a large-scale vaccine distribution plan. Additionally, Mr. Becerra's embrace of radical social policies, including abolishing private health insurance, enacting Medicare-for-All, and supporting taxpayer-funded abortions disqualifies him from holding a position of public trust, especially as the Secretary of HHS. This nomination is a direct contradiction to President Biden's call for unity and should be rescinded immediately," said Rep. Dan Bishop.

Former Calif. Attorney General Xavier Becerra's healthcare knowledge is limited to his service on the Ways & Means Committee as a Member of Congress, where he introduced a mere seven healthcare-related bills during his 24-year career in Congress. Since then, Mr. Becerra has continued his staunch support of creating a single-payer healthcare system. Additionally, Xavier Becerra has lead efforts to rollback conscience protections and force organizations like the Little Sisters of the Poor to provide contraceptive coverage to employees despite the nun's sincerely-held religious beliefs. The call to withdraw Mr. Becerra's nomination is supported by March for Life, The Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America, and Association of Mature American Citizens.
